Acts

The coming of the Holy Spirit

1. And when the day of Shavuot6 had come they were all in one place together.

2. And a sound came suddenly out of heaven as bringing a violent wind and it filled the whole house7 where they were sitting

3. and dividing tongues like fire were seen on them and they sat upon each one of them,

4. and all were filled by the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages just as the Spirit was giving them to speak out boldly.

2:5. And there were Jewish people staying in Jerusalem, devout people from all the nations under heaven.

6. And when this sound was made a multitude gathered and was amazed, because while they were speaking, they all were hearing in their own languages.

7. And they were astounded and amazed saying, "Look, are not all those who are speaking from Galilee?

8. Then how do we each hear in our own language with which we were born?

9. Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those who dwell in Mesopotamia, Judea, and even Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia,

10. Phrygia, and also Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and the visiting Romans,

11. both Jewish people and proselytes, Cretes and Arabs. We hear them speaking the greatness of God in our languages."

12. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"

13. But others, mocking, were saying that "They are drunk because they have been filled with sweet new wine." Peter's Speech at Shavuot8

2:14. But Peter, as he stood up with the eleven, raised his voice and spoke out to them, "Men, Jewish people, and all those who are visiting Jerusalem, let this be known to you and pay attention to my words.

15. For these are not drunk as you assume, for it is the third hour of the day,9

16. but this is that which was spoken through the prophet Joel,

17. 'And it shall be' in the last days, says God,
'I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters will prophesy
and your youths will see visions
and your elders will dream dreams:

18. and indeed upon My male servants and upon My female servants
in those days I will pour out from My Spirit,
and they will prophesy.

19. And I shall give wonders in heaven above
and signs upon the earth below,
and blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

20. The sun will be changed into darkness
and the moon into blood,
before the great and glorious Day of the Lord is manifest.

21. And it will be that everyone who would call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.' (Jl 2:28-32)

2:22. "Men of Israel, listen to these words! Jesus of Nazareth, a man Who was proven among you by God, in miracles and wonders and signs which God did through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know,

23. you killed this One, Who was given up by the before determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, when you nailed Him by lawless hands,

24. Whom God raised up, after He loosed the cords of death, (Ps 18:4, 116:3) because cords were not able to hold Him fast under death.

25. For David said in respect to this,
'I saw the presence of the Lord before me through everything,
because He is on my right hand so that I would not move.

26. Because of this My heart rejoiced and My tongue was glad,
but yet also My flesh will dwell in hope,

27. because You will not abandon My life to Hades
and You will not give Your Holy One to see corruption.

28. You made known to Me the ways of life,
You will fill Me with joy in Your presence.' (Ps 16:8-11)

2:29. "Men, brothers, allow me to say to you with confidence concerning the Patriarch David, that he died and was buried, and his tomb is among us until this day.

30. Therefore since he was a prophet, and knew that God swore to him with an oath "He will cause One to sit on His throne from the fruit of David's loins," (Ps 132:11, 2Sm 7:12,13) 31. since he saw beforehand, he spoke concerning the resurrection10 of the Messiah that
'neither would He be forsaken in Hades
nor' His flesh 'see corruption.' (Ps 16:10)

32. God resurrected this Jesus, of which we all are witnesses:

33. therefore since He has been raised to the right hand of God, and has taken the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He poured this out which also you are seeing and hearing.

34. For David was not raised into the heavens, but he says,
'The Lord said to My Lord,
You must sit at My right hand,

35. until I would have put Your enemies under Your feet.'11 (Ps 110:1)

36. Therefore assuredly all the house of Israel must continually know that God also made Him Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified."

2:37. And when they heard this they were pierced in their hearts. They said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What could we do, men, brothers?"
